Body Harmonics instructors land key roles on ONETV’s new Pilates TV show—Pilates, movement and exercise enjoy resurgence post-pandemic
Back in June 2022, when Zoomer Media producer Kevin Craig was looking for certified Pilates teachers for a new “fitness” show on ONETV, who could have predicted that three Body Harmonics teachers would go on to ace the audition?
Margot McKinnon, Founder and Education Director of Body Harmonics, that’s who.
“I was not surprised at all,” says Margot. “These women are consummate professionals and exceptional Pilates & Movement teachers. They were not only selected because of their teaching skills and communication styles but also because they know how to make this work their own.”
Even though she was not entirely surprised by the trio’s achievement, Margot says: “Knowing their educational roots were with BH is a gratifying reminder that our approach to teaching movement resonates with audiences far beyond our doors.”
So, who are these mystery Pilates instructors? As someone who spent her early career teaching aerobics on TV and producing Pilates videos, I am very excited to be able to unveil a new generation of talent and inspiration. What follows is a series of Q&As (and video) featuring Nila Nadarajah, B.Kin., Melissa Zenarosa, B.Comm., and Sharon Harvey, MFA—the three Body Harmonics Certified Pilates & Movement teachers selected to lead fitness celebrity Anjelica Scannura in her new ONETV show: “Anjelica Scannura is The Pilates Pupil.” Also included are interviews with Kevin and Anjelica. I hope you enjoy going behind the scenes with these talented individuals and that their enthusiasm inspires you to tune in and move your body (and your mind)!
The Pilates Pupil, which launched late last month, airs twice a day, Monday through Friday, on Moses Znaimer’s ONETV. Each of the Body Harmonics instructors leads 10 different episodes.
Q&A with Kevin Craig, producer of The Pilates Pupil on ONETV
When we were auditioning for The Pilates Pupil, we were looking for certified Pilates instructors who had a great connection with Anjelica, a warm and inviting personality, and a deep appreciation for teaching and helping others learn Pilates.
Sharon, Melissa and Nila each captivated us from the start and we knew they would be great for TV. They all had their own personal connection with Anjelica which is so important when you are working together on TV. Sharon, Melissa and Nila each have positive attitudes, fun
personalities and are enthusiastic. Their teaching methods were very inviting and inclusive and it was very easy to follow along with their instructions which is beneficial when making a fitness show that is accessible to everyone.
We are hoping that audiences will gain a new love and appreciation for Pilates! The routines are simple and effective and can be done by anyone no matter what level of Pilates you are at. We want to show the viewers that as you age, you can stay strong, flexible and toned through these accessible Pilates routines.
Q&A with Nila Nadarajah, guest host/teacher on The Pilates Pupil on ONETV
Nila Nadarajah holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. She is a Registered Kinesiologist and a Body Harmonics Certified Pilates & Movement Teacher and Teacher Trainer. She also holds a CancerSmart Rehab Techniques certificate. She has been teaching a wide range of people at Body Harmonics for more than a decade.
At Body Harmonics, we have the opportunity to make teaching Pilates a full-time career. We get to teach people in one-on-one, group settings and in front of a camera regularly, which challenges us to think on the spot and make changes on a whim. This was incredibly helpful on set! I felt it was second-nature to be flexible and adaptable.
Anjelica is a natural star! I loved working with her because she always brought high energy and professionalism to the set. This helped pull me out of nervousness to show up and be myself on camera. Not to mention that she is HILARIOUS.
The most gratifying thing is knowing that the magic of what we do at Body Harmonics is making its way into households across the country. I know that we will help more and more people find ways to be active; whether they are new to movement, have impairments or are cautious about things like osteoporosis, we’ve put togethers something that has the potential to help a wide array of people.
Pilates is for everyone! I hope people join us and tune into the show to see how we can take simple but effective exercises, and build a challenging class in only 30 minutes. Since the show airs twice a day, it’s easy to make it a part of your daily routine!
The wrap party!
Q&A with Melissa Zenarosa, guest host/teacher on The Pilates Pupil on ONETV
Melissa Zenarosa is a Body Harmonics Certified Pilates & Movement Teacher. She also holds several Body Harmonics Specialist designations and a Bachelor of Commerce. Melissa has been dedicated to refining her skills to better serve diverse populations including active aging, pregnancy and rehabilitation. When she’s outside of the studio, Melissa enjoys playing sports and staying active while connecting with nature.
I didn’t have expectations going into the audition. I looked at it as an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and see what could possibly come of it. When I got the call, I was shocked and excited to have been chosen as one of the leading Pilates teachers for the series! I thought, what a unique way to share my skills as a Pilates and movement professional while offering a Pilates experience to a broader audience.
Body Harmonics swiftly transitioned online at the start of the pandemic. During that process, we were all learning along the way and received valuable tips on how to demonstrate and effectively guide clients through private and group classes. Now that we were teaching through a screen, we had to be conscientious about things we never considered when teaching in person, such as colour of clothing, positioning during demonstrations, pace of speech, even sharper cueing, etc. More importantly, we learned how to sense our clients’ moods through the screen and do the best we could to help them through some very difficult times. I think BH did an excellent job in identifying the nuances of teaching Pilates online while maintaining the soft skills that come with teaching. I think all of this allowed me to feel comfortable and confident connecting with an audience through a lens as if we were together in person.
I hope this show highlights the benefits Pilates offers, especially to those who aren’t familiar with this type of movement and exercise. I was intentional about sticking to BH teachings as much as possible. I infused BH “progressive sequencing” and the “BH cueing formula” into each episode with the hope that viewers would fall in love with smart movement and how good it can make them feel, physically, mentally and even emotionally.
I loved getting to know the production/filming crew and Anjelica. Everyone was extremely welcoming, kind and patient. Anjelica made every filming day fun, and she was a great lead to follow. I also found it fascinating to witness the hard work of many crew members to put a show like this together. It’s gratifying to watch a finished episode knowing how many run throughs, script tweaks and laughs were involved to get it polished and ready for TV. I’m excited for viewers to watch and experience our classes!
In the beginning, I found it challenging to feel comfortable with multiple cameras and crew members watching my every move, while trying to “act natural.” But, since the crew was so easy going, I became comfortable quickly.
Q&A with Sharon Harvey, guest host/teacher on The Pilates Pupil on ONETV
Sharon Harvey is a performing artist with a Master’s Degree in Dance Choreography, and Dramaturgy. She also has a background in aerial arts, personal training and nutrition. She is a Body Harmonics Certified Pilates alumna who has been teaching and promoting wellness within the dance community for more than 20 years. Sharon is currently a teacher at Sheridan College in the Performing Arts program. She also teaches flexibility and aerial skills at Brass Belles.
I feel incredibly honoured to have been chosen as a co-host for “Anjelica Scannura is The Pilates Pupil” TV show. This opportunity is truly special as it allows me to be part of the resurgence of the Pilates movement. It’s exciting to introduce Pilates to a wider audience through television and to showcase its emerging inclusivity, diversity (every-BODY, age, ethnicity, gender) and its more recently recognized support for overall wellbeing and mental health.
My training with Body Harmonics played a pivotal role in my success in securing this opportunity. It equipped me with the tools and confidence to observe bodies individually and to guide participants towards more efficient and fluid movement. By using simple vocabulary and imagery, I aim to empower viewers to gain confidence in their own mind-body connection.
My hope is that viewers will see the simplicity and accessibility of Pilates through the show. Anjelica and I both celebrate the importance of body positivity and the ability for everyone to benefit from Pilates, regardless of their age, ethnicity, body type or gender. We want viewers to experience the joy and benefits of Pilates and discover the power of connecting with their bodies.
Q&A with show host and creator of Anjelica Scannura is The Pilates Pupil
Anjelica Scannura is an award-winning dancer, choreographer and adjudicator. She is the Co-Artistic Director of the family-run dance and music ensemble Ritmo Flamenco and has performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company and in productions worldwide from Europe to the Middle East. She’s a recurring guest star of Vision TV’s Your All Time Classic Hit Parade and is a frequent guest artist at the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre.
Developing a Pilates series made sense so that we could bring fresh content to the network with an updated look and approach. ONETV viewers know me to be a leader, but they don’t see the work I do behind the scenes to make that work possible. I never stop training, and I never stop being a student. It felt right to create a series highlighting my journey as a student so that I could continue to inspire viewers in different ways.
Pilates has helped me identify imbalances and strength/flexibility disparities within my body since I was about 12 years-old, and prevent injury. I’ve been very active my entire life and heavily involved in different kinds of high impact niche dance forms. By strengthening my core muscles and improving alignment, Pilates helped me to fend off back pain, enhanced my stability, and increased my overall body awareness. These physical benefits positively impacted my personal life by promoting better posture, reducing my risk of injury, and improving my ability to engage in daily activities with ease.
Sharon, Melissa and Nila each brought an attention-grabbing charisma that jumped off the screen immediately. Our energies complimented each other. Even though they were all teaching Pilates, they created individualistic classes that set them apart from one another, creating a very well-rounded overall series. The stories of their lives and reasons for pursuing Pilates were also compelling to me, and the conversation flowed effortlessly. We were endlessly curious about each other and had instant chemistry. They also would laugh at my cheesy jokes (which was not mandatory, but appreciated nonetheless).
Certification signifies that an instructor has met specific standards set by reputable Pilates schools. These standards encompass knowledge, competency, and adherence to professional ethics and guidelines. Training with a certified instructor ensures that the viewers are receiving instruction from someone who has met recognized industry standards and follows a code of conduct, bringing an integrity and a deep understanding of the human body and specific conditions that are in need of rehabilitation.
The Pilates Pupil offers cues and refinements for specific exercises, which are valuable in understanding proper alignment, engaging the correct muscles and refining your technique. ONETV creates accessible training for those who are tight on time and resources. ONETV always creates programming that’s enjoyable to watch and entertaining as well. The setting and stagecraft are always stunning, and we provide on-screen metrics to track progress. We hope that you will enrich your life by joining us, discovering new exercises, stimulating progress, and enhancing the quality of your life.
Margot on what makes Body Harmonics Pilates & Movement accessible enough for TV?
“I think there are two key factors that make Body Harmonics Pilates & Movement done on a mat accessible,” says Margot. “One is our approach to cueing and setting people up to move in the most optimal way possible. The other is something we call progressive sequencing that helps make mat classes endlessly dynamic and innovative.”
I always hope that people feel rejuvenated and relaxed after a Body Harmonics style class. Beyond that, it is important that they can follow along with ease and leave with a sense of mastery over their movements.”
