When you first start teaching, you’re so nervous that you just want to get through the class. As years go by, you go grow and develop into someone who can deliver a class with ease and essentially go into autopilot.

Whether you’re a new Pilates teacher or have had some experience, self evaluation is the best way to see if you’re on track in your Pilates classes.

We’ve listed some of the key questions that we use at Body Harmonics. Our studio instructors check these on a regular basis to make sure they’re delivering top notch classes.

How to use the self evaluation questions

Go ahead and read through the list. Before you teach a class, take another peek at it. After class, check each point and see where you’re on track and where you need to improve.

Also invite another instructor or someone who’s opinion you value and respect to evaluate you as well. Let them read through the questions before and after class and offer you their feedback.

A few rounds of self evaluation will give you better insight into what kind of teacher you really are. When you take action on what needs improvement, your skill level and confidence will rise and you’ll feel even more fantastic about teaching Pilates.

Body Harmonics self evaluation questions for group classes

  • I was present in the room at least 5 minutes ahead to chat as people arrived and set the music, mats, lights, blinds, props
  • I introduced myself personally to every new person and welcomed them
  • I acknowledged and welcomed latecomers
  • I used elements of the cueing formula to keep instruction clear and simple
  • I used different types of instruction (verbal, demos, hands-on) to personalize the class for participants
  • I used progressive sequences (taught in the Mat Work Intensive) to build challenge and complexity and to keep the class flowing
  • I incorporated creative and fun exercises
  • I guided people in terms of what to feel and where to feel several times throughout the class
  • I explained a few key concepts so participants understood why they were doing something
  • I felt energized and happy by end of class
  • I felt scattered and frustrated by end of class
  • Participants looked lighter in their bodies – more comfortable, aligned and strong (this is sophisticated for newer teachers to achieve but something to shoot for; when this is the result you can almost guarantee the teacher employed the cueing formula well and taught sequences to build support in the trunk, hips and shoulders
  • There was a buzz in the room at the end of the class (chatting, lingering, interaction); if this does not happen, strive for it; if people feel a sense of community and friendship in their classes they tend to attend regularly and really become part of the studio culture
  • Participants interacted with me during class – i.e. asked questions, joked around
  • I stayed after class to chat with people and answer questions or said that she could be reached by email or phone; or, that she would get in touch in a day or so
  • As I was chatting with people I reset the room
