Neurophysiology of Pilates
Our nervous system is a vital underpinning to our daily movement and function and yet it remains the most elusive and least understo od of the bodily systems.
The nervous system is our information superhighway that controls all the information that we take from our environment and integrates it into meaningful functional movement. Through the manipulation of sensory input we can effect a change in the structural organization of the nervous system and thus how we move. In this way, the brain’s structure becomes the information that it receives.
This 2-day workshop is based on the latest research on the brain and how it can adapt and change its structure in response to information. You will gain a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system as well as the system pathways responsible for both perceiving our environment and moving within our environment.
An appreciation of the neurological underpinnings of movement will help your cuing become more powerful in order to affect the responses you want in your clients. You will also learn how to design exercises that better access the nervous system to facilitate improved motor control and awareness.

Therabands™ & Weighted Balls
Learn more than fifty exercises, each one focused on creating connections through the core of the body via the limbs and then back again. Our theoretical framework focuses on shoulder girdle and hip mechanics. The amazing part is how the resistance of the Therabands and Weighted Balls can actually create better range of motion while building strength. Leave with another set of tools to create that incredibly fine balance between support and range of motion in the ball and socket joints so their connection and interdependence with the core of the body is efficient and clear. Resistance training never felt so good.

Magic Circle™ & Swivel Discs
This workshop combines the old and the new with over ninety exercises to explore. The Magic Circle™ is one of Joseph Pila tes’ original pieces of portable equipment and is a marvellous tool for rebalancing and creating both deep and superficial support in the ball and socket joints and up the midline of the body. The Swivel Discs are a modern addition to the Pilates mix of small apparatus and are unsurpassed in terms of refining muscle recruitment and enhancing neuromuscular re-patterning at all the major joints of the body.

Rebounding (on mini-trampolines)
Some scientists conclude that jumping on a mini-trampoline is possibly the most effective exercise yet devised, especially because of the effect rebounding has on the lymphatic system. The body is subject to gravitational pul ls ranging from zero to three times the force of gravity, depending on how high the person is rebounding. Unlike jogging on hard surfaces which puts extreme stress on certain joints such as the ankles and knees eventually damaging them, rebounding affects every joint and cell in the body equally. As low-impact cardiovascular training with the added bonus of direct benefits to the lymphatic system, Rebounding is a safe and effective way to round out participants’ conditioning needs.

Breathing Mechanics
How we breathe affects everything we do. As an event it can be both unconscious and conscious. And, as one of the guiding principles of Pilates, breathing is integral to building bodies that move with ease and integrity. This workshop provides you with the biomechanical and physiological underpinnings of this vital process. Theory crosses over to experience as you explore several ways to breathe to enhance function of both the respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. Throughout the day we will work interactively to interpret different faulty breathing patterns, how these affect movement and posture and ultimately how to help reverse them for optimal function.

Foot & Ankle
“Feet First” should be our motto! See the foot and ankle in 3-D. Develop a functional understanding of foot/ankle movement mechanics for elastic rebound, how the arches of the feet work optimally and what the cause and effect is when they break down. We will also spend time learning to observe major postural deviations in the foot and ankle that lead to postural problems in the entire skeleton. Try some super simple reconditioning exercises that produce profound results...you get to experience them firsthand so you can take them back to share with your clients.

Hip & Knee
The hip and knee are intimately connected in terms of movement mechanics, our sense of equilibrium and very often movement impairments. Using 3-D visuals and an array of exercises designed to provide ease of movement and appropriate support in these weight -bearing joints, we will focus on integrating the legs into the pelvis and torso for optimal function.

Shoulder Complex
The Shoulder Complex is exactly that - complex! We start with both a visual and experiential review of the shoulder region that will increase your skills of observation and assessment. You will learn to identify postural deviations, imbalances and timing incongruities that are often the root of issues in the shoulder and neck area. You will learn simple exercises that help to integrate the shoulder complex into the torso for better overall support and dynamic movement.

Posture & Gait Analysis
In this two-day intensive workshop you will analyse posture and gait mechanics from both a structural and functional perspective. We start with an overview of archetypal “ideal” and “faulty” postures and review the structural underpinnings of each. We observe posture in three distinct ways so you leave with a dynamic understanding of how to observe your clients when they stand or sit. We move from there into an analysis of human gait that traces our patterns of ambulation form our feet, up through our legs and hips, into the pelvis and up the length of the spine into the shoulders. Based on the Spinal Engine theory of Gracovetsky, this workshop helps you see gait mechanics as a whole body experience. Your power of observation and your understanding of how movement is integrated as we walk will expand dramatically. You will leave with a completely new way of seeing bodies in motion and a new repertoire of simple exercises that have profound effects on both our postural patterns and gait mechanics.

Myofascial Lines of Movement
Drawing on the historic and contemporary frameworks of les chaines musculaires, Anatomy Trains, and GDS, this workshop helps you navigate several different conceptions of myofascial lines in the body, from a movement education perspective. We put these lines of movement to work in a practical framework of Pilates-based exercises that help optimize the functioning of key lines of movement that criss cross the body. The overall objective is to help instructors see systemic patterns for movement in the body followed by a review of key exercises to target each one.

Handedness & Scoliosis
Deviations in the curves of the spine can impact our movement mechanics in a variety of ways. In this workshop we focus on the determinants of handedness (being right handed or left handed) and different manifestations of scoliosis. You learn the characteristics of these patterns and how they affect posture and muscle activation throughout the body. We then apply this knowledge to the Pilates context to determine effective exercise protocols. You leave with fresh observation skills and a new paradigm of understanding spinal mechanics and their influence on both structure and function. In addition, you will have more analytical tools with which to make informed exercise choices.

Mighty & Mysterious Psoas
Central to the body, the psoas is considered by many to be the muscle of integration between the legs, pelvis and spine. Over the course of this workshop we will explore how the psoas affects posture and alignment and how it acts as antagonist unto itself. You will learn how to work with this elusive muscle to help restore optimal function from the centre of the body outwards.

Pilates for Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis
Who is our demographic in Pilates classes and studios across North America? 75% of our participants are women between the ages of 30 and 60. This presents an interesting challenge because much of the Classical Pilates Repertoire is contraindicated for this very population and can actually put women at risk for fracture and exacerbate the risk factors associated with Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis.
This workshop is packed with current information and analysis of these conditions and a detailed map of how to manipulate the Pilates repertoire to make it bone safe and very effective for building bone density. You will leave equipped with the tools to work proactively with the specialized needs of people with osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

Pilates For Men
Men - the untapped market. When they get Pilates they love it and become totally committed. But so few men actually try Pilates and stick with it.
In this workshop we look at key ways to communicate so Pilates makes sense and feels impactful to our male clients. We zero in on key exercises and sequences that draw men to attention and make them realize the powerful connection Pilates can have to the activities they love to participate in. Whether they are weekend warriors, true athletes or back pain sufferers, men have been underrepresented in our classes and studios for too long and are missing out on the profound benefits Pilates offers them. We also look at some of the typical challenges men face in a Pilates class and trace these to biomechanical characteristics unique to men.

Arcs & Barrels
In this two day workshop you will be introduced to the lesser known trio of Pilates equipment: the Ladder Barrel, the Spine Corrector and the Arc Barrel. We will start with a framework to understand how these pieces work and how they enrich conditioning on the Mat and other equipment. A review of key barrel exercises follows so you can conceptualize how to use the more than 130 barrel exercises in your Pilates setting. What defines the Barrels as unique is how they support the body and encourage an “opening up” front to back and side to side without compromising form.
